When you’re in a high-pressure field and you have a disability, there’s a lens on you. It’s a magnifying lens; step in the wrong spot and you will burn. You are a burden. You are a liability. You have to be better; you have to be perfect. Any less and the cost-benefit analysis will fall against you.
Neurodivergence
There are many words for the many things that I am. Each of these words carries meaning, a set of other words stemming therefrom that describes certain behaviors and expectations of myself. Now, finally, at age 41, I have learned a new word to describe an aspect of my identity that I have always struggled with naming, a fundamental odd-ness that set me apart from others. I am autistic.
